11 Brunch Items You Can Cozy Up With On Christmas Morning

With Christmas only two sleeps away, I’m sharing 11 breakfast items that you and your loved ones can cozy up with on Christmas morning. A lot of the dishes you can even prepare ahead, so all you have to do is pop them into the oven in the AM.

There’s nothing better than the smell of an amazing meal being cooked in the kitchen Christmas morning. It’s my favorite morning of the entire year, and something I always look forward to. We started making Eggs Benedict on Christmas morning a few years ago, and the tradition has stuck. Is there anything better than fluffy, rich, amazing Hollandaise sauce accompanying your breakfast? I don’t think so!

In addition to eggs benny, we typically do a full Christmas morning spread including Gravlax mini bagels, Bloody Mary’s, mimosas, and homemade cinnamon rolls or coffee cake. We all retreat to the living room to enjoy our food and pass out and open presents by the fire!

Below I’m sharing 11 recipes you can enjoy Christmas morning, several of which my family has enjoyed over the years, as well as a few new ones I’d like to try myself!

  1. Traditional eggs benny with hollandaise: We pretty much make our eggs the same way they’re prepared in this recipe by Tyler Florence. Here are some helpful tips for poaching eggs.
  2. Eggs Benedict casserole: If you don’t have time to make actual eggs benny in the morning, this overnight Eggs Benedict casserole looks absolutely delicious.
  3. Homemade cinnamon rolls: I love a little something sweet with my savory, having homemade cinnamon rolls for everyone to share is also sure to please your fam!
  4. Hash brown quiche: You can’t go wrong this this quiche. It mixes two of everyone’s favorite breakfast ingredients – potatoes and eggs. I made this recipe the other weekend and it was SO good. You can make the hash brown crust and freeze overnight so all you have to do in the morning is pour in the egg filling into the pan, and pop it in the oven.
  5. Gravlax salmon & mini bagels — If you need something quick and easy, putting out a platter of fresh Gravlax (you can cure your own salmon if you’re feeling up for it!), along with capers, red onions, cucumber, tomato and cream cheese and serve on a platter with mini bagels.
  6. French toast casserole: If you’re more of a sweets person, try baking a French toast casserole. This is also a vegetarian friendly recipe by Ree Drummond. Again, you can prepare this the night before, refrigerate overnight and then pop it into the oven in the morning.
  7. Breakfast potatoes: If you’re keeping your eggs simple (scrambled or sunny side up) add these cheesy potatoes to the side or make it like a skillet!
  8. Oatmeal or yogurt bar — This is a great lighter option, with little prep needed — hence no recipe linked here. All you have to do is put out your favorite yogurt or oatmeal, add fresh berries (or the fruit of your choice!), brown sugar, slivered almonds, chopped walnuts, dried fruit, flax seeds and honey into small bowls on the side so everyone can choose their toppings!
  9. Cheesy grits: We grew up vacationing in the south so I’m a huge grits fan! There’s something so delicious and cozy about a good bowl of grits with your eggs in the morning!
  10. Mom’s egg strata: We also enjoyed this recipe for many years Christmas morning (and may just bring it back this year it’s so good).
You can also make this dish ahead of time, so all you have to do is pop it into the oven in the morning. Here’s the recipe: 6 slices of white bread, 5 eggs, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 pint of half-and-half, 1 teaspoon of dry mustard, 1 package of shredded cheddar cheese, 1 lb of softened butter — optional 1 lb of bulk sausage. Instructions: We like to recommend a 8″ round deep casserole dish. Butter the casserole dish. Remove crust from bread. Butter both sides and and then cut into quarters. Layer bread pieces on bottom of casserole. Top with a generous layer of cheese (and sausage if using). Continue layering ingredients and end with cheese. Mix together eggs, half-and-half, and dry mustard. Pour over bread layers. Refrigerate OVERNIGHT. Bake 350 for 40 minutes until puffy or golden brown.
  11. Waffle bar (that the kids will love!) — If you have little ones running around, instead of doing a casserole, you could set up a waffle bar with all sorts of fun toppings (and maybe some special toppings for Christmas like green & red M&Ms), but include the usual suspects too like bananas, peanut butter, and maple syrup.
